Top of the table Galwegians did the business against Corinthians who are rooted at the bottom of the table in their section of division one. The contest was high octane stuff in a typical local derby which was played in blustery conditions. The visitors got off to a flyer as they put on early pressure setting up a maul on the Wegian five metre line. Corinthian scrum half Mickey Murphy set up the play as he released the oval ball to first center Cian Begley to scramble in for an excellent touchdown. Outhalf Conor Murphy added the extras. Play continued at pace as the supporting crowd kept IRFU referee Andy Brace on his toes. After twelve minutes he pulled the Corinthian back row for loitering but the home side outhalf Aidan Moynihan’s effort rebounded off the goal post. Some minutes later the light blues first center Rory Parata slipped through the Corinthian cover to skate in for an simple touchdown. Moynihan added the extras. The home outfit secured their second try in the twentieth minute as they put extreme pressure on Corinthians after a line out on the visitors five metre line. Wegians secured the ball in the resulting maul. Scrum half Barry Lee gathered the oval ball and dived over to extend their lead. The outhalf missed out on the extras. Corinthians upped their game after this set back eventually gaining a penalty on the home sides twenty two as the referee pulled the light blues for loitering. Murphy converted same leaving his side only two points adrift at the break.
The home side got away to an excellent start in the second half as Moynihan slotted his first penalty to extend their lead by five points as the visitors were pulled for holding. After this setback the Cloonacauneen outfit were unable to make any headway and seemed to be running out of ideas. In the fiftieth minute the visitors were caught out again for crossing. The Wegian out half slotted the penalty to leave his side leading by eight points. Things were heating up at this stage and the ref had to issue a yellow card to both sides. Substitute prop Alan Bane nearly got in for the visitors in the seventieth minute but the home side defense held out. Corinthians were eventually awarded a penalty on the home side twenty two. Murphy slotted same to leave his side only five points adrift. But time was running out as the home side defended well. They eventually got into Corinthians twenty two and the referee awarded a simple penalty in front of the visitors posts which was slotted over the bar by Moynihan as the whistle blew for full time. Leaving the final score Galwegians 21 points, Corinthians 13 points. Corinthians travel to Belfast Harlequins next Saturday with three games remaining. Venue Deremore Park.Kick off 2.30pm
